How good are your listening skills? Here are five easy steps to take to assure effective listening between you and your mentee!

Active Listening Skills[1].doc

After reviewing 'Active Listening Skills', practice effective communications with a friend or neighbor. Following the session, ask your assistant how they felt about the process. Were they convinced that you were listening and really concerned about what they were saying? Did they feel comfortable talking to you? Were they more apt to speak because of your attitude and attentiveness? Consider your overall feelings about the communication segment. Now write a simple, one-page document discussing the communication experience and what, if anything, you have learned. Forward the one-page document to the Mentor Trainer at FAMILY Inc. for further review, and to receive training credits. Be sure that your name and date are prominently displayed in the upper left hand corner. Thank You.

Ten Principles of Effective Mentoring

1.   Be a friend

2.   Have realistic goals and expectations

3.   Have fun together

4.   Give your mentee a voice and a choice in deciding on activities

5.   Be positive

6.   Let your mentee have much of the control over what the two of you talk about-  and how you talk about it

7.   Listen

8.   Respect the trust your mentee places in you

9.   Remember that your relationship is with the youth, not the youth's parent

10.  Remember that you are responsible for building the relationship

Join the Conversation at MENTOR's Online Community
MENTOR's National Mentoring Institute is pleased to announce the launch of a new Online Community for mentors to network with other mentors, obtain support and access resources to develop stronger, more impactful mentoring relationships. An expansion of www.mentoring.org, the "Mentors' Community" is to be used in conjunction with training and support provided to mentors by programs.

Mentors are invited to join the community to share their experiences and ask questions. Discussion topics include starting a new relationship, dealing with difficult issues, closing a relationship, etc. The community features private messaging, live event chats, blogs, and ways to reward good posts and helpful people by marking contributions with positive "Kudos."

Mentors can access over 50 linked and downloadable resources to support all phases of the mentoring relationship through Mentoring.org. Topics range from building trust, establishing boundaries, mentoring youth from various backgrounds, resources for military families, activity ideas, and much more.
Become a part of the mentor community, join today!

Now that you have completed this portion of our program, please take the time to fill out our survey about the FAMILY Inc program. This will provide you an opportunity to tell us what you found helpful and what we can do to improve. Thanks so much!
